As a global leader in office and production print technology, Xerox has redefined the workplace experience for over a century. With a legacy of innovation, Xerox has driven major breakthroughs in home and office technology, from the first xerographic image in 1938 to inventing ethernet and the graphical user interface. Despite holding more than 13,000 patents for innovation, Xerox is best known for its trusted multifunction printers (MFP) and other business devices.
The obstacle
COVID-19 limits safe access to shared Xerox devices
As the pandemic swept across the world, businesses encountered unforeseen challenges, with workplace safety becoming a critical concern. Changes and innovations would be necessary for staff to feel safer returning to the workplace.
Xerox quickly recognized that shared multifunction printers could potentially harbor viral transmission due to multiple shared touch points among team members. Rethinking the user experience for shared devices became imperative, necessitating adaptations for various devices and global use cases.
The opportunity
Remote-controlled access for a variety of devices
In response to these challenges, Xerox wanted to find a way for people to interact with their devices in a touch-free manner, minimizing contact points.
Realizing the need for external expertise and support, Xerox partnered with Findan Software, leveraging our extensive experience in creating many of Xerox’s ConnectKey Applications. This depth of experience provided us with unique insight into Xerox’s infrastructure and systems.
Findan Software collaborated closely with the Xerox team to develop the Touchless Access App, a custom Progressive Web App (PWA). This PWA, resembling a platform-specific app, was designed using web technologies but operates from a single codebase, offering functionality across iPhones, Android devices, and tablets. This means that the widest possible number of devices are supported while also streamlining future updates, not unlike a website.
Users can simply scan the QR code on the Xerox AltaLink or VersaLink Multifunction Printer to access the control menu through the Touchless Access App, securely operating via the cloud without requiring the user’s mobile device to be on the same network.

The Summit
A rapid solution for safer workplaces
In response to the disruptions caused by the pandemic, Findan Software expedited the development of the custom software solution for Xerox and its global user base. Within 7 months, the Touchless Access App was ready for deployment, establishing Xerox as one of the pioneers in providing an alternative, contactless access method for shared MFP devices. This initiative addressed the need for touchless options amid the ongoing efforts to slow the spread of illnesses.
